Knox Box Program

The Palatine Fire Department has the ability to use "Knox Box" to gain rapid non-destructive access to your residence or business. Only the Fire Department is able to gain access to the Knox Box. If your building is a commercial occupancy that has a fire alarm or sprinkler system, you are required to have a Knox Box in accordance with the Village of Palatine Code of Ordinances. These boxes are secure, and are listed by Underwriters Laboratory. Both Commercial Knox Boxes and Residential Knox Boxes can be ordered directly from Knox.

Keys to vital areas of your business or home are required to be placed within the Knox Box. Vital Areas include the main entry door, an interior master key, roof hatches, and fire sprinkler rooms. The Fire Prevention Division understands that the cost of a key is often far less than the cost of repairing a damaged door or frame. If your Knox Box is capable of holding additional keys, they can be placed in the box as well.

Should you change the locks to your business or home, contact Fire Prevention at your earliest convenience to make arrangements for an inspector to change the key(s) inside your Knox Box. If you have questions about a Knox Box or want to learn more about the box please contact the Fire Prevention Division Office at 847-359-9029.
