Amusement & Entertainment Establishments - Type A

Amusement and Entertainment establishment is a building or premises or a portion thereof the principal use of which is for the presentation to the public for a price or any type of exhibition, athletic event, show or other amusement or entertainment, or the making available of such building or premises or portion thereof or facilities therein for the use, recreation, amusement or entertainment of a consumer thereof. Examples include:

  • Bowling alleys
  • Indoor athletic fields/floors
  • Movie theaters
  • Pool halls

Food Establishments - Type B

Food establishment is a building or premises or a portion thereof the principal use of which is for the sale or dispensing or serving of food, foodstuff or drink for consumption on or off the premises or in or out of the building. Examples include: 

  • Grocery stores
  • Mini-marts
  • Restaurants

Service Establishments - Type C

Service establishment is a building or premises or a portion thereof the principal use of which is for the rendering of a personal or material service, including a service intended to generate a sale by the person rendering the service or a person, firm, partnership or corporation represented by the person rendering the service, whether as a salesman, broker, manufacturer’s representative or otherwise, regardless of whether or not a commodity is worked or exchanged; and also including clerical, administrative or other support services for or on behalf of a person, firm or corporation engaged in rendering a service, as described herein. Examples include:

  • Contractors’ office
  • Hair salon
  • Tailor shop

Retail & Wholesale Establishments - Type D

Retail and wholesale establishment is a building or premises or portion thereof the principal use of which is for the sale or distribution of any commodity for a price or fee by a seller to a consumer or one business to another business. Examples include: 

  • Factory/warehouse sales
  • General mercantile
  • Specialty shops

Industrial Establishments - Type E

Industrial establishment is a building or premises or a portion thereof the principal use of which is for manufacturing or repair including assembling, processing, fabrication, mechanical repair and service of vehicles or machines, storage, or scientific research and development. Examples include:

  • Automotive repair and service
  • Factories
  • Small mechanical machinery repair

Places of business can have more than one classification, and in this case the business license fee is calculated based upon the square footage of each use type.

Home Business - Type F

Any home business must obtain a Home Business License and will be subject to the Village of Palatine's Home Occupation regulations (see Section 6.04 of the Village's Zoning Code for more information).
