Clerk - Marg Duer
Marg Duer has been serving as Clerk for the Village of Palatine since 1989. After working in public relations in Chicago, Marg moved to Palatine in 1972, and began her career at Fremd High School teaching English and art. She and Bob Duer married in 1974, and are proud parents of three and proud grandparents of 4. Marg retired from teaching in 2005, but continues to be involved in the community at the Farmers’ Market, the N&NW Clerks Association and on the boards of the Sister Cities Association and the League of Women Voters.
Raised in Moline, Marg earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Northwestern University, Evanston, and her master’s degree from St. Xavier University, Chicago.
Throughout her tenure as Clerk, Marg has been active in the N&NW Municipal Clerks’ Association, completing the Municipal Clerks Institute and Academy through the University of Illinois to achieve the status of Registered Municipal Clerk and Certified Municipal Clerk. She continues her education through MCI Seminars, staying abreast of legislative issues affecting municipalities and best practices for records management.
Marg served on the board and as president of the N&NW Suburban Cook County Clerks Association of 46 municipalities in northern Cook County. She was also Manager of the Healthy Communities Initiative through Northwest Community Healthcare and served as clerk of the vestry and superintendent of Christian Education at St. Philips Church.
In 1990, Marg hosted the initial meetings of the Sister Cities Association of Palatine, and established Fontenay-le-Comte, France as Palatine’s Sister City in 1995.
Seeking fresh, local produce, Marg opened the Palatine Farmers’ Market in 1992, with 6 vendors. Under her management, it has grown to over 30 vendors with live local entertainment and involvement by local civic organizations.
After serving on the Board of the Northwest Cultural Council, Marg became a founding member and first treasurer of Palatine/Inverness Arts Council.
She was the first Palatine recipient of the Studs Terkel Humanities Award for promoting the arts in Palatine.
