1. How can I dispose of paint?

Latex paint that has completely dried up can be disposed of as garbage. Mix paint with an absorbent material such as kitty litter, sand or saw dust until no liquid is present and remove the lid. 2. Where can I recycle batteries?

According to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, single-use Alkaline batteries AAA, AA, C, D 6v & 9v are classified as "non-hazardous" and may be safely disposed with household trash. 

Lithium Primary and rechargeable Nickel Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMh), and Lithium-Ion batteries contain mercury and other heavy metals and according to the IEPA, should be recycled. 

Because single-use Alkaline and Lithium batteries look amazingly similar, the best way to know is to read the label.  Always place individual Lithium batteries in a plastic zip baggie, wrap it in plastic film or tape the terminal end with duct or electrical tape before recycling or disposing in the garbage to eliminate the risk of sparking a fire.

3. How do I dispose of branches or limbs?

Unlimited weekly collection of bagged yard waste and bundled brush takes place the first week of April through the last week of November. Branches or limbs not exceeding four inches in diameter must be bundled in lengths not to exceed four feet. Bundles must not weigh more than 60 pounds. Bundles shall be secured with biodegradable cotton twine or rope. For further information, please see our yard waste page.

4. How do I dispose of appliances?

All large appliances are collected as white goods by Groot on Wednesdays and subject to a $20.00 charge payable directly to Groot.  Residents must contact Groot at least 24 hours in advance at (800) 244-1977 to schedule a collection and make payment. White goods include:
- Air-conditioners
- Boilers
- Dishwashers
- Dryers
- Freezers
- Furnaces
- Humidifiers
- Ranges/ovens
- Refrigerators
- Washers
- Water heaters

5. How do I dispose of large items?

One bulk item may be placed at the curb weekly for collection. Such items include: - Appliances
- Barbecue grills
- Bicycles
- Cabinets
- Counter tops
- Furniture
- Lawn mowers
- Mattress and box spring
- Plumbing fixtures
- Snow blowers (all gas or propane tanks must be removed)
- Sofa
- Swing sets (when cut into lengths of four feet or less)
- Comparable items

Items exceeding 60 pounds in weight and 4 feet in length may be subject to a special pick up at an additional charge.

6. How do I dispose of carpeting?

All rugs, carpeting, and padding shall be bundled and taped in rolls not to exceed four feet in length. Each bundle shall not exceed 60 pounds in weight or 2 cubic yards. For further information, please visit our bulk items page.

7. Can I throw out building materials?
