Illinois Rail Safety Week

Palatine Police Participate in Illinois Rail Safety Week
September 24-30, 2017

The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP) has asked the Governor of the State of Illinois to declare September 24 through 30 as Illinois Rail Safety Week in order to promote vehicle and pedestrian safety around railroad tracks and trains.

To promote rail safety awareness and education, the Palatine Police Department will be participating in Illinois Rail Safety Week.  Enforcement details are planned throughout the week at various railroad grade crossings and commuter stations within the Village of Palatine to cite both drivers and pedestrians who disobey the laws associated with railroad grade crossings and railroad property.  In addition, police officers will be distributing literature to the public that contains information on how to be safe around trains and train tracks.

Please remember, not only is it against the law to stop your vehicle on railroad tracks, it is also against the law to stop your vehicle anywhere within the highway-rail grade crossing.  Highway-rail grade crossings are typically marked by white stop lines located on the pavement in advance of the crossing, and if not marked by white stop lines, the highway-rail grade crossing extends from protective gate arm to protective gate arm.
According to Illinois Operation Lifesaver, more than 86 percent of all collisions occur at crossings with active warning devices (flashing lights, gates, and ringing bells).  For more information about Illinois Rail Safety Week, please visit

Curbside Leaf Collection

Curbside Leaf Collection Begins Monday, October 16

There will be two regular leaf collections scheduled between Monday, October 16 and Thursday, November 9 for each Palatine residence. All raked leaves must be put into the street and ready for pickup no later than 7:00 a.m. on scheduled days.

Raked leaves cannot be placed into the street before 4:00 p.m. the day prior to collection. There is only one pass down each street during scheduled collection days. Leaf collection is a two-step process with crews collecting leaves with a machine before the sweeper does the final cleanup of leaf debris. Street cleanup is longer than leaf pickup due to the slower pace of the sweeper.

November 13 is the final leaf pickup opportunity for all Village residences. All zones must have have the final collection of leaves out on the street by 7:00 a.m. Crews will start the final pickup on Monday and continue throughout the week until all leaves have been collected.

Visit our website for more information regarding curbside leaf pickup.
