Solicitation for Electric Supply Companies
Recently residents have reported an increased number of solicitors going door-to-door regarding electric supply to Palatine residents. Currently, the Village of Palatine does not endorse or refer residents to any electric supplier.
As of May 2017, the Village contract with Constellation Energy ended and residents were informed that their new supplier would be ComEd. Residents are encouraged to review options for electric rates, however the Village is not in contract with any supplier at this time.
The Village advises all residents to be careful in opening their door to strangers. Solicitors licensed by the Village of Palatine will have an ID badge issued by the Palatine Police Department and it will be worn at all times and on display for inspection upon request.
Soliciting in the Village of Palatine will be allowed with a license issued by the Palatine Police Department. Solicitors are to follow the soliciting hours instructed by the Palatine Police Department. Hours are restricted Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Residents may post a “No Solicitors Invited” card here.
Residents should be aware that the Village of Palatine does not employ solicitors to represent the Village for electric supply or other types of solicitation of sales and/or product and services. Residents should not open their doors to anyone who cannot present ID, and should call the non-emergency number (847) 359-9000 if there is any question as to the validity of the ID being presented by the solicitor.
Also, residents should not allow solicitors inside their home and should be careful of solicitors who request to inspect yards or other entryways to your home. Additionally, giving access to private information such as billing/account numbers/financials should be avoided. You may also call the company that is being represented by a solicitor to gather more information regarding products and services being sold by a solicitor.
Finally, if there is any suspicious behavior such as but not limited to soliciting outside allowed hours, intimidation/bullying, forcible entry, and/or misrepresentation on the part of the solicitor, residents are encourage to call 9-1-1 immediately. Providing the name of the company and dates on the badge is also helpful to police in tracking solicitors that are not in compliance with the Village ordinance.
