Kids Life Jacket Loaner Program

Kids Life Jacket Loaner Program

The Palatine Fire Department, in cooperation with the Boat/US Foundation, provides Coast Guard approved kids life jackets for short-term loan at no cost, as part of the Foundation's "Life Jacket Loaner Program for Kids".

The life jackets available are able to fit children up to 90 lbs with a chest size up to 29". Basic information, such as a driver’s license number will be required in order to check out a life jacket for up to two weeks.

If possible, bring your child or children with you to ensure life jackets fit properly. This is a great short term alternative to purchasing a vest! For more information, call the Fire Department at (847)202-6340 during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or visit our website at

Palatine Firework Safety

Reminder to Residents About Fireworks in the Village

The Palatine Fire Prevention Division reminds residents that all fireworks, including the so-called 'safe' variety, are illegal in the Village of Palatine. Illegal fireworks classified as 'Approved Consumer Fireworks' include sparklers, cones including showers of sparks, fountains, repeaters/cakes, mines, comets, tubes, shells, fancy florals and parachutes.

'Prohibited Consumer Fireworks' are those that are illegal to use and possess in Illinois, but are legal in some neighboring states. These include sky lanterns, all hand-held fireworks, bottle rockets, firecrackers of any size or type, sky rockets, roman candles, chasers, buzz bombs, helicopters, missiles, pin wheels, and planes.

Tips for enjoying firework displays:
  • Resist temptation to get close to the actual firing site. The best viewing is from a quarter mile away.
  • Pets have sensitive ears, and the noise associated with firework displays can be uncomfortable for dogs, especially. The best choice is to leave dogs at home.
  • Although it rarely happens, it is possible firework components might fall to the ground without exploding. The public should take caution and not touch these fireworks and call 9-1-1 immediately.
Have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July by participating only in public firework displays that are conducted by trained professionals.
