Construction Alert: Cedar Street and Elm Street Improvements Project
Cedar Street, from Illinois Avenue to the cul-de-sac, and Elm Street, from Dorset Avenue to Illinois Avenue, will be reconstructed this year. The Village received over $1,500,000 in Rebuild Illinois grant funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), which will provide the all of the funding required to rehabilitate the pavement. Work is scheduled to begin the week of June 20, 2022, and is anticipated to be complete by early August. This project includes pavement resurfacing and base course batching on Elm Street from Gilbert Road to Illinois Avenue, full-depth pavement reconstruction on Cedar Street and on Elm Street from Dorset Avenue to Gilbert Road, curb and gutter replacement, new storm sewer installation, sidewalk replacement, and ramp upgrades to meet ADA requirements. Both streets will be accessible through the duration of the project, but at times there will be traffic delays due to construction activities. Elm Street from Dorset Avenue to Gilbert Road will be one-way only for southbound traffic for the duration of the project. A detour route will be posted for northbound traffic. Traffic wanting to head north on Elm Street will be directed south on Elm Street to Illinois Avenue, Cedar Street, then Dorset Avenue. At the intersection of Dorset Avenue and Elm Street, vehicles can then proceed south on Elm Street through the work zone. If you have any questions about this public improvement project, please call the Public Works Department at (847) 705-5200.

When temperatures in Cook County rise to unsafe levels, the County's Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security provides an updated list of cooling centers for residents who do not have access to air conditioning. During hot weather, residents are reminded to:
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Try to stay in the shade or indoors as much as possible.
- If working outside, take frequent breaks, preferably in an air-conditioned space.
- Check on elderly neighbors and those with functional needs.
- Take pets indoors and make sure they have plenty of water.
- Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.
Residents who need to seek shelter at a cooling center should contact the center first to verify availability and hours of operation.

Vehicles Blocking Sidewalks
The warm summer weather brings children and adults back out on the sidewalks throughout our village. At times, people using the sidewalks find themselves walking in the street to get around vehicles parked blocking the sidewalk. This creates a potential danger to a child on a bicycle or a person pushing a baby stroller walking in the street to get around an illegally parked vehicle. As a friendly reminder, village ordinance 18-81-12 prohibits blocking the use of sidewalks between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., except when the snow removal ordinance is in effect and both axles of any such vehicle are located on private property.
The law governing the obstruction of the sidewalks is both a local ordinance and a state law. Violations of the ordinance can result in the issuance of a parking citation. Please remember to make sure your parked vehicles do not block the usage of any sidewalk.

Palatine Police Announce Fourth of July Safety Campaign
The Palatine Police Department announced plans for stepped-up July Fourth traffic enforcement with a focus on impaired and unbuckled drivers. The safety campaign will run from June 16 through the early-morning hours of July 5 to encompass three summer weekends leading up to and after Independence Day. Additionally, the Palatine Police Department will conduct a Roadside Safety Check in the 1200 block of W. Algonquin Rd from 10:15 PM on Friday, June 24, 2022 through 3:15 AM on Saturday, June 25, 2022.
“It’s simple: If you’re driving, don’t drink or use marijuana or other drugs,” said Commander David Brandwein. “Our officers will be working around the clock to keep impaired drivers off the road and enforce all other traffic laws.” The Palatine Police Department will join the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local police and sheriff’s departments for the increased statewide enforcement effort.
Use these tips to help ensure a happy and safe holiday:
- Designate a sober driver and give them your keys before you go out.
- Don’t let friends or family members drive under the influence.
- If you are drunk or impaired by marijuana or other drugs, call a taxi, take mass transit, use your favorite ride-sharing app, or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.
- Promptly report drunk drivers to law enforcement by pulling over and dialing 911.
- Make sure everyone in your vehicle wears their seat belt. It’s not only the law, but also your best defense against an impaired driver.
The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High Get a DUI” and “Click It or Ticket” programs are made possible by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The enforcement period runs concurrently with IDOT’s media campaign, reminding motorists that “It’s Not a Game” to drive impaired.

District 15's Board of Education is considering a comprehensive proposal referred to as Moving 15 Forward that would benefit every student, school, and community. This is a community-driven plan that addresses three critical areas of improvement: repair and restore facilities, update learning spaces, and improve student transitions. Updating learning spaces would allow the district to create space for full-day kindergarten, update libraries to leverage instructional technology and 21st Century skills, improve hands-on learning opportunities, and establish Middle Schools. Find out more about the plan at https://www.ccsd15.net/M15F.
