Vehicles Blocking Sidewalks
The warm summer weather brings children and adults back out on the sidewalks throughout our village. At times, people using the sidewalks find themselves walking in the street to get around vehicles parked blocking the sidewalk. This creates a potential danger to a child on a bicycle or a person pushing a baby stroller walking in the street to get around an illegally parked vehicle. As a friendly reminder, village ordinance 18-81-12 prohibits blocking the use of sidewalks between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., except when the snow removal ordinance is in effect and both axles of any such vehicle are located on private property.
The law governing the obstruction of the sidewalks is both a local ordinance and a state law. Violations of the ordinance can result in the issuance of a parking citation. Please remember to make sure your parked vehicles do not block the usage of any sidewalk.

Free Compost from the MWRD
Now is a great time to prepare for yard and gardening projects. Why not plan to include cost saving and soil health improving compost? The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) offers a free compost delivery program to Cook County residents, schools and non-profit organizations. The MWRD’s Exceptional Quality (EQ) Compost is a sustainable and environmentally beneficial product derived from the water reclamation process that blends biosolids with woodchips, grass clippings and leaves. EQ Compost is rich in organic matter and improves soil structure and porosity, allowing plants to more effectively utilize nutrients. It can be used as mulch, to establish plants and grass, or mixed with soil for pots and planter boxes. There is a 10 cubic yard minimum order size for delivery. For smaller amounts of compost, residents may bring their own buckets, bags and shovels to pick up free compost at one of six water reclamation plants. For more information and to place an order for compost, visit the MWRD’s website.

Special Gifts Theatre Community Mentorship Opportunity
Special Gifts Theatre (SGT) is a not-for-profit organization that was founded in 2000 to provide individuals who possess a wide array of special needs (physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and learning) the opportunity to experience the joy and enrichment that theatre arts can bring. They are looking for peer mentors ages 10 and older. Their Peer mentors program qualifies for service hours and it's evident that the mentors get just as much out of the program as the students with disabilities. Check out Special Gifts Theatre's website for more information, programs, and opportunities. Currently, Special Gifts Theatre has a virtual viewing of their original, adapted performance of The Lion King live on stage at Sundling Jr High School, which was performed last month. See local actors with disabilities shine on stage with the support of peer mentors. Rafiki, played by Palatine resident, Meghan Gillies, says "I have finally found a place where I can be myself and be accepted!" about her transformative experience with SGT. Tickets are $15 and available for viewing through June 5: Ticket Link.
