Palatine Police Department
Taking Back Unwanted
Prescription Drugs

Saturday, October 23

On Saturday, October 23rd from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Palatine Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your pills and patches for disposal to the Palatine Police Headquarters located at 595 N. Hicks Rd. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Last spring, Americans turned in 420 Tons (839,543 lbs.) of prescription drugs at more than 5,000 sites operated by the DEA and over 4,400 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall, in its twenty previous Take Back events, the DEA and its partners have taken in over 14.5 million pounds—more than 7,200 tons—of unwanted prescription drugs.

To ensure a quick and safe transaction, please do the following;
  • Medication: All medication should be sealed in clear plastic zip-lock bag(s).
  • Syringes: Although the DEA does not accept Syringes, Palatine Police will accept Syringes for disposal. Syringes must be capped and packaged separately from medication.
  • Liquids: WILL NOT be accepted.
  • Creams: UNOPENED creams only.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—pose potential safety and health hazards.

For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the October 23rd Take Back Day event, go to www.DEATakeBack.com or call the Palatine Police Department at 847-359-9000.

Crime Alert: Catalytic Converter Thefts

Catalytic

The Palatine Police need your assistance in providing information regarding the recent surge in catalytic converter thefts.  The trend of thieves sawing off this part of a vehicle’s exhaust system has been around for years, but in recent months, the U.S. has seen a rapid increase in these type of thefts.  The thieves are taking the catalytic converters to retrieve pieces of precious metals (including platinum), and sell them for a profit.  In the last 3 months, the Palatine Police have taken 21 reports of catalytic converter thefts.  Though difficult to prevent in many situations, there are some points to be aware of:

  • If you are able to park in a garage, please do so whenever possible.  If not possible, park in well-lit areas of parking lots or any area where your vehicle is highly visible to many people.
  • There are cable type locks you can purchase to have installed.  Talk to your local mechanic about options for your make and model vehicle.
  • Be aware suspicious people and sounds.  If you hear a saw on metal sound, or see a subject crawl under a vehicle, call 911.  Do not confront the thieves, call 911 and provide a description of the person or vehicle they are leaving in.
  • If you discover your vehicle makes a strange sound, take note of when and where you were parked before you discovered it.  Make a police report regarding the incident.

We need the eyes and ears of Palatine residents to assist us in tracking down and catching these thieves.
