Resolve to Make Your Home Safer in 2020. Ring in Fire Safety!

If you’re like the majority of Americans, you’re starting off the new year with a resolution to improve
your fitness and health. As you eat better and exercise more often, consider one additional step to
maintain your good health: Fire Prevention.

The Palatine Fire Department is urging Palatine residents
to make 2020 a healthier and more fire-safe year.

Most people say they feel safest at home, but U.S. Fire Administration data shows that 83 percent of all fire deaths in the U.S. actually happen in homes.

Follow this safety information to ring in fire safety this year:

  • Make sure that your home is protected by working smoke alarms. Half of all home fire deaths happen at night, when people are sleeping. Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home, in every bedroom and outside all sleeping areas. Make sure that everyone in your home knows how to get outside and where to meet if the smoke alarm sounds.
  • A smoke alarm with a dead or missing battery is the same as having no smoke alarm at all. Resolve to test all of your smoke alarms monthly to make sure that they are working. Replace your smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or if they don’t make a sound when you test them.
  • Cooking is the main cause of home fires and home fire injuries. While you’re preparing healthier meals, remember to make safety the first ingredient. Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking at high temperatures, like frying, broiling or boiling.

For more fire safety information visit our website or the National Fire Protection Agency.

The Palatine Fire Department wishes everyone a happy and safe 2020!

census

Census Day is April 1, 2020

Make Sure Illinois Counts

Every 10 years, a census is taken of all persons living in the United States. It is important  that every Illinois resident be counted so our state population accurately reflects our needs.

The 2020 Census can help our community plan for a variety of resident needs including new roads, schools and emergency services. It helps determine how billions of dollars in Federal funding is distributed to states and communities every year. It determines how many representatives our State gets in Congress and is used to redraw district boundaries.

Beginning mid-March households will receive an invitation in the mail to respond. Every household will have the option of responding online, by mail or by phone.

Taking part is everyone's civic duty. Completing the census is a way to participate in our democracy and say "I Count"!

For more information visit the Census 2020 website.
