Village of Palatine Receives Award for Advancing Solar Energy Growth

The Village of Palatine has been awarded a bronze designation from the national SolSmart program, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office, for taking the initiative to encourage solar panel installations throughout the community.  This program designation will contribute towards promotion of sustainable energy and will help drive economic development by encouraging solar companies to do business in the Village.

Steps taken by the Village will help residents and businesses get affordable, clean and reliable electricity through solar energy. The city has streamlined their permitting process, trained staff on best solar practices and provided educational handouts regarding solar panel installations on their website. SolSmart awarded points based on the city's commitment to reducing barriers to solar energy development by making it easier and faster to go solar. As a SolSmart Special Recognition Award winner, The Village of Palatine joins an exclusive and diverse group of communities across the U.S. who have not only satisfied the minimum  requirements, but exceeded the high standards established by the SolSmart Criteria Advisory Committee.

"We are honored to receive the SolSmart bronze designation and Special recognition award for our initiative to promote solar energy use within our community. We are committed to streamlining our processes to encourage growth in solar panel installations and to attract solar companies to do business in the Village," said Harry Spila, Director of Community Services at the Village.

New Internet Purchase/Exchange Zone

Buying or selling something from a stranger? The Palatine Police Department welcomes citizens to use their newly created "Internet Purchase Exchange Zone" in  support of a safer venue for residents to exchange goods sold through online sites, such as Craigslist, Facebook, Offer Up, etc.

A large sign designates a well-lit area on the west side of the main police station parking lot that is under 24-hour video surveillance. This new exchange zone provides a safer area to reduce the risk of criminal activity.

Have your meet up location at the Palatine Police Headquarters front parking lot, 595 N. Hicks Road, and tell them to meet you by the sign.

Holiday Enforcement Mobilization Numbers

The Palatine Police Department conducted both day and night enforcement from December 16, 2019, through January 2, 2020, reminding motorists to buckle up and not drive impaired during the Click it or Ticket and Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over mobilization.  The Palatine Police Department joined other state and local law enforcement agencies across Illinois to reduce highway fatalities by cracking down on unbuckled motorists and impaired drivers.

Throughout the holiday season, uniformed Palatine Police officers hit the streets on dedicated traffic enforcement saturation patrols.  These saturation patrols emphasized the hours of midnight to 3:00 am which have proven to be the deadliest on Illinois roadways.  Additionally, a roadside safety check was set up in an effort to make sure motorists were driving responsibly.

The following is a result summary of the Holiday mobilization in the Village of Palatine:

1 DUI arrest
47 seat belt citations
17 speeding citations
13 illegal use of cell phone while driving citations
25 other traffic related citations
1 suspended/revoked driver’s license arrest
2 drug arrests
4 felony/misdemeanor arrests

This law enforcement mobilization was funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation and is part of the nationwide “Click it or Ticket” and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaigns.  For more information, visit  Should you witness erratic or impaired driving, please call 9-1-1.  Let’s all do our part to make Illinois roadways as safe as they can be.
